What is Proposition 65?
Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to inform Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. These chemicals may be found in products sold in California, within homes or workplaces, or released into the environment. By providing these warnings, Proposition 65 helps Californians make informed decisions about their exposure to harmful substances.
Additionally, the law prohibits businesses in California from knowingly discharging these chemicals into drinking water sources. Passed in November 1986 by a 63-37 percent vote, this law aims to protect public health and the environment.

What Chemicals are Listed under Proposition 65?
The Proposition 65 list includes both naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals used in products like pesticides, household goods, food, drugs, dyes, and solvents. These chemicals may also result from manufacturing processes or be produced as byproducts, such as from vehicle exhaust. Since its introduction in 1987, the list has grown to approximately 900 chemicals and continues to expand.

How Can I Protect Myself?
Thanks to Proposition 65, many manufacturers have made changes to reduce harmful chemicals in their products. However, some everyday items may still contain these chemicals, and it’s crucial for consumers to be informed and take necessary precautions to limit exposure. The best protective measures depend on the product or environment in question and the specific chemicals involved.
